The mission of the Brownwood Fire Department is to minimize the loss of life and damage to property and the environment resulting from fires, medical emergencies, rescues, and disasters through fire suppression, medical services, prevention, education, and other related emergency and non-emergency activities.

We will actively participate in our community, serve as role models, and strive to effectively and efficiently utilize all of the resources at our command to provide a service deemed excellent by our citizens.


Brownwood Fire-Rescue is an all career Fire Department and the only Fire Department in Brown County with paid firefighters. The department has 30 shift personnel with a Captain and a Lieutenant on each shift. The Fire Marshal Office is comprised of one full time Fire Marshal and one part time Fire Inspector. Brownwood Fire-Rescue is led by a Fire Chief and one Assistant Fire Chief with an administrative staff consisting of a part time Secretary/Receptionist.

The department responds to calls from two fire stations. Brownwood Fire-Rescue response area includes the City of Brownwood and Brown County covering over 900 square miles. The department responds to all structure fires, vehicle accidents, hazmat emergencies, wild land fires, and rescue emergencies. The department also provides Medical First Response for medical emergencies within the City of Brownwood.

Works a schedule of 24 hours on /48 hours off. Responsible for performing firefighting skills in the protection of life and property by combating, extinguishing and preventing fires, responding to emergency medical calls and administer medical aid to the level of their TDH certification. Responds to hazmat emergencies, rescue operations, and other calls of service. Work entails primary responsibility for specialized firefighting duties under emergency conditions which may involve personal hazard. Considerable time is spent in study for certifications and training; daily routine work in the maintenance of firefighting equipment, apparatus and firemen’s quarters. Employees in this class may be assigned to operate and maintain firefighting equipment or apparatus employing special skills.

Pay: Step 1: $2,884.00 per month/$11.88 hr. – certified with less than
1 year full time employment as a Firefighter;

Step 2: $3,172.00 per month/$13.07 hr. – 1+ years but less than 3 years experience and certified with 1 year or more employment as a Firefighter;

Step 3: $3,407.00 per month/$14.04 hr. – 3 + years experience and certified with 3 years or more employment as a Firefighter.
